This 15.2km loop offers a quintessential Welsh mountain running experience, combining a fast, sheltered start with a formidable climb into the high peaks. Beginning in Glyn Tarell, you’ll enjoy a relatively flat 7km warm-up along the Taff Trail, tracking the Afon Tarell on a mix of accessible tracks and quiet lanes. However, the true challenge begins as the gradient kicks up, transitioning from gentle grassy slopes to the more rugged, eroded terrain near the summits. Reaching the dual peaks of Corn Du and Pen y Fan at 886m provides a physical test complemented by a technical, stony descent that requires nimble footwork and focus under fatigue.
Glyn Tarell serves as a dramatic gateway to the central Brecon Beacons, an area steeped in geological and military history. As you ascend Pen y Fan—the highest peak in South Wales—you are running through an ancient Old Red Sandstone landscape carved by glacial activity over thousands of years. This area is famously used for selection by the UK's Special Forces, and while the "Fan Dance" route is legendary, this particular loop offers a more diverse experience by blending the serene riverside valley floor with the exposed, windswept ridges of the national park. Be prepared for the microclimate here; the weather at the summit can be radically different from the valley floor.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
