Conquering the Pen y Fan Horseshoe is a true rite of passage for fell runners and trail enthusiasts in South Wales. This mid-distance 13.8km loop packs a punch with over 500m of elevation gain, taking you across the iconic summits of Cribyn, Pen y Fan, and Corn Du. Starting from the Neuadd Car Park, you’ll tackle a mix of technical rocky sections and smooth, high-altitude ridge lines that offer breathtaking views across the Brecon Beacons National Park. The "SL" course rating warns of steep gradients and exposed edges, so expect a heart-pumping ascent with some of the best flowy ridge running in the UK once you reach the top.
Steeped in local lore and legend, the peaks of the central Beacons are as historically significant as they are physically demanding. The name "Pen y Fan" translates roughly to "The Peak of the Top," and the area famously serves as a rigorous testing ground for the British Special Forces. As you run through the Llanfrynach Community area, you're traversing Old Red Sandstone that has been shaped by glacial erosion over millennia. Keep an eye on the horizon; on a clear day, the vistas extend all the way to the Bristol Channel. Remember that the weather at 886m can shift instantly—locals always advise packing a waterproof layer even when the sun is shining in the valley.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
