Tackle this invigorating 3.6km loop that takes you straight to the heart of the Brecon Beacons' rugged beauty. Starting from the B4520, this out-and-back loop is a punchy hill session featuring 128m of ascent over short, sharp gradients. The terrain is entirely off-road, consisting of grassy paths and well-worn trails that can get muddy after a Welsh downpour, so trail shoes are highly recommended. As you reach the summit of Pen y Crug, the panoramic views of the Usk Valley and the dominant Central Beacons peaks — including Pen y Fan — make every bit of that hilly climb worth the effort.
Beyond the physical challenge, this route journeys through ancient history. Pen y Crug is home to one of the most impressive and well-preserved Iron Age hillforts in Mid Wales. As you run the perimeter of the ramparts, you are tracing the defenses built by the Silures tribe over 2,000 years ago. Local runners favor this spot not just for the technical trail practice, but for the sense of isolation and history found just a stone's throw from the market town of Brecon. It’s a perfect short "burn" for those who want a true mountain feel without a full day’s expedition.
