Route Overview & Local Insights

The Brecon River Run is a refreshing 5.7km out-and-back journey that perfectly captures the serene riverside atmosphere of Mid Wales. With a minimal ascent of just 28 meters, this route is exceptionally flat, making it an ideal choice for recovery runs, tempo sessions, or runners looking for a scenic escape without the steep climbs typical of the Brecon Beacons. Following the gentle flow of the River Usk, you’ll navigate a mix of natural riverside paths and trails starting from Dinas Road. The course features a clever double-loop design at the far end, allowing you to maximize your time by the water before retracing your steps back to the start.

Steeped in history, Brecon (Aberhonddu) serves as the historic market town at the heart of the National Park. As you run alongside the Usk, you are following one of the most important salmon fishing rivers in Wales, a waterway that has shaped the local economy for centuries. This specific section of the river offers a quieter alternative to the popular hill climbs of Pen y Fan, providing a peaceful environment where you might spot a kingfisher or a dipper mid-stride. After finishing your 5.7km circuit, the town’s traditional Welsh tearooms and independent cafes provide the perfect post-run reward in the shadow of the cathedral.
