Experience the rugged charm of the Brecon Beacons on this 7.9km loop starting from the picturesque village of Talybont-on-Usk. Runners can expect a dynamic session that begins with a deceptive flat stretch along the calm waters of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal before tackling a significant climb. As you transition onto the Usk Valley Way, the terrain becomes a demanding ascent through open fields, climbing roughly 170 meters in short order. Reaching the high point of 300m, you'll be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the northern Usk Valley before enjoying a fast, exhilarating descent through dense woodland trails that take you all the way back to the valley floor.
Talybont-on-Usk serves as a historic gateway for adventurers, famously situated where the Caerfanell River meets the River Usk. The area is steeped in industrial heritage; the canal you run alongside was once an 18th-century lifeline for transporting coal and iron, while the slopes of Craig Danywenallt have watched over this landscape for millennia. After finishing your hills, local runners highly recommend stopping at one of the village's traditional pubs—the Star Inn or the White Hart—which have become unofficial hubs for the South Wales trail running community to refuel and share stories of the peaks.
