Starting from the iconic Dinas Rock car park, this 9.7km circuit offers an exhilarating blend of steady climbing and sweeping descents through the rugged beauty of the Brecon Beacons. Though classified as 100% paved, don't let that fool you—with 269m of vertical gain and a "Hilly 4" rating, your legs will certainly feel the burn as you circumnavigate the base of Moel Penderyn. The route provides a fantastic mix of open hillside vistas and quiet country lanes, with the option to take a tactical breather at the untimed detour toward Sgwd Yr Eira, where you can experience the rare thrill of walking (or running) behind a thundering curtain of water before tackling the western flanks of the peak.
Steeped in industrial and natural heritage, Hirwaun and the surrounding Penderyn area serve as the southern gateway to the Cynon Valley. As you navigate the flanks of Moel Penderyn, you are running through a landscape shaped by limestone quarrying and ancient folklore. The area is home to the world-renowned Penderyn Distillery, the first to bring whisky production back to Wales in over a century, utilizing the mineral-rich water from the very hills you are traversing. This route captures the transition from the dramatic "Waterfall Country" geology to the high moorland fringes, offering runners a true sense of the wild, resilient spirit of South Wales.
