Experience one of Mid-Wales' most breathtaking trails on this 8.7km loop starting from the historic market town of Dolgellau. This route offers a moderate challenge with 140m of ascent, blending flat, fast stretches along the Mawddach River with punchy climbs through the surrounding hills. Approximately 60% of the course is paved, making it an excellent choice for runners who enjoy a mix of smooth Mawddach Trail (Lôn Mawddach) surfaces and more rugged, farm-track terrain. As you head toward Penmaenpool, you’ll enjoy wide-open views of the estuary before turning back through the scenic Bryn Y Gwin Farm, where the elevation adds a healthy "hilly" rating of 3 to your workout.
Steeped in Welsh history, Dolgellau serves as a gateway to the southern reaches of Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park. This route traces the footsteps of Victorian travelers who once flocked to the Mawddach estuary for its alpine-like beauty, often compared to the landscapes of Switzerland. Running past Penmaenpool, you’ll see the iconic George III Inn and the historic wooden toll bridge, which dates back to 1879. The return leg via Bryn Y Gwin provides a glimpse into the traditional Welsh upland farming culture, offering a quieter, more elevated perspective of the Cader Idris mountain range looming in the distance.
