This 11.7km loop out of Barmouth offers a serious test for trail runners looking to trade the coastline for the rugged heights of Snowdonia. The route begins with a deceptively gentle 5km stretch of quiet, paved road that allows you to find your rhythm before the real work begins. Once you turn onto the Cambrian Way, the terrain transforms into a demanding SL-class fell run, climbing steeply over Mynydd Egryn and its southern peak. With over 500m of ascent and sections topping out above the 500m contour line, you’ll experience technical mountain paths and expansive views across Cardigan Bay and the Mawddach Estuary. Be prepared for a mix of hard-packed surfaces and wilder, hilly trails where the weather can shift from coastal sunshine to mountain mist in minutes.
Barmouth, or Abermaw in Welsh, has long been the meeting point of the mountains and the sea, serving as a gateway to the southern reaches of the Rhinogydd range. Running over Mynydd Egryn places you on ancient ground; this area is rich with Bronze Age history, including nearby stone circles and the remains of Iron Age hillforts that once guarded these strategic ridgelines. The Cambrian Way itself is one of Wales' most iconic long-distance trails, and this specific segment captures the transition from Victorian seaside charm to the raw, untamed landscape of North Wales. Locals know that while the climb is grueling, the descent back toward the harbor provides some of the most rewarding vistas in the national park.
