Prepare for a vertical adventure on this 8.8km out-and-back trek through some of Snowdonia’s most dramatic scenery. Starting from the Ty Nant Car Park near Penmaenpool, this SL-graded course tackles a relentless 710m of ascent via the legendary Pony Path. You’ll begin on manageable grassy slopes, but the terrain quickly transitions into a technical, stony ascent as you climb toward the clouds. The final push involves a rewarding scramble to the summit of the "Chair of Idris." While the path is well-maintained, the exposed nature of the peak means you’ll experience true mountain running, requiring keen focus on your footing and respect for the rapidly shifting Welsh weather.
Steeped in Welsh mythology, Cadair Idris is said to be the seat of the giant Idris Gawr; legend has it that anyone who spends a night on its peaks will wake up either a madman or a poet. As you navigate the rocky ridges, you’ll be overlooking the glacial Cwm Cau and the Mawddach Estuary, a landscape forged by volcanic activity and carved by ice. This area of Southern Snowdonia (Eryri) offers a more rugged, wilder feel compared to the busier northern peaks. Local runners prize this route for its pure "mountain-man" aesthetic and the historic link to the ancient drovers who once traversed these mountain passes.
