Push your limits on this iconic 8.8km circuit of Cadair Idris, one of Wales' most legendary peaks. Starting from the Dôl Idris car park, this route is a true sky-run with 686m of vertical gain packed into a relatively short distance. You'll begin with a pulse-raising climb through ancient woodland on the Minffordd Path before emerging into a dramatic glacial amphitheatre. Expect technical, rocky terrain and an undulating ridgeline that demands nimble footwork and steady lungs. The rewards are immense: once you crest the exposed summit, you're treated to sweeping views of the Mawddach Estuary and the Cardigan Bay coastline, followed by a fast, technical descent that will test your quads down to the valley floor.
Cadair Idris, or the "Chair of Idris," is steeped in Welsh mythology; legend says that those who spend a night on the mountain will descend either a poet or a madman. As you navigate the steep crags above the dark, mirror-like waters of Llyn Cau, you’re running through a landscape shaped by volcanic activity and carved by ice age glaciers. This area near Corris Uchaf is quieter than the northern Snowdonia hubs, offering runners a more rugged and solitary experience. The mountain weather is notoriously fickle here, often trapping clouds even when the coast is clear, so carrying technical gear and respecting the 500m+ exposure is a hallmark of the local fell-running tradition.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
