Experience the rugged beauty of Snowdonia on this 8.2km loop starting from the historic market town of Llanrwst. This "SL" course offers a fantastic mix of terrain, beginning with a relatively flat, paved section alongside the serene River Conwy before tackling the "hilly" heart of the Gwydyr Forest. With 237 meters of ascent, runners will face a challenging climb up toward Pen Uchaf Gwydyr, where the reward is a technical but exhilarating stretch of trail passing the secluded Llyn y Parc. The descent back toward the Conwy Valley provides sweeping views, making this a perfect moderate-distance run for those looking to balance riverbank speed with mountain grit.
Llanrwst is steeped in Welsh history, famous for its iconic 17th-century stone bridge, Pont Fawr, and the ivy-clad Tu Hwnt i'r Bont tearoom. As you run through the Gwydyr Forest, you are traversing land that was once a hive of lead and zinc mining activity; look closely and you might spot the remnants of old workings hidden amongst the trees. This area is a cornerstone of North Wales trail culture, offering a micro-climate that often feels temperate and sheltered compared to the exposed peaks of the nearby Ogwen Valley. After your 8.2km effort, local runners recommend heading into the square for a well-earned recovery coffee at one of the independent Welsh cafes.
