Route Overview & Local Insights

Prepare for a rugged, high-octane ascent with this 7km mountain loop that tackles the iconic Moel Siabod. Starting from the renowned Plas y Brenin National Outdoor Centre in Capel Curig, this "out-and-back" style route is a true test of mountain running prowess, packing over 650m of vertical gain into a relatively short distance. You'll navigate a mix of technical forest trails and steep, rocky open mountainside where the terrain is consistently "Grade 5" hilly. As you break the 500m contour line, the path becomes increasingly wild; runners should expect loose scree and potential boggy patches underfoot, demanding both concentration and strong ankles. The reward at the summit is unparalleled: a 360-degree panorama of the Snowdon Horseshoe and the Glyderau that many locals consider the best view in all of Eryri.

Moel Siabod stands somewhat isolated from the other major peaks of Snowdonia, making it a prominent landmark that dominates the skyline of Capel Curig. Historically, this area has been the heartbeat of British mountaineering; Plas y Brenin itself has been training world-class climbers and mountain athletes since 1955. While the mountain looks imposing, it is a favorite among local fell runners for its directness and varied micro-climates. Because of its standing position, weather fronts often hit Siabod before the main massif, so even if it looks clear in the village, keep an eye on the cloud base. After your descent, it is almost a local rite of passage to grab a coffee or a pint at the Tyn-y-Coed Inn down the road to celebrate conquering one of the most honest climbs in Wales.
