This 7.2km loop starting from the Alpkit store in Betws-y-Coed offers a perfect introduction to technical trail running in the heart of Snowdonia. With 223m of elevation gain, expect a moderately challenging mix of terrain that transitions from the well-trodden Snowdonia Slate Trail into more rugged forest paths. The ascent is punchy but rewarding, leading you past historical mining sites and the serene Coed Mawr Pool. While the official stats suggest a paved surface, local runners know to prepare for the damp, mossy conditions typical of the Gwydir Forest—stable trail shoes are highly recommended for the descent from the Aberllyn Lead Mine.
Betws-y-Coed, known as the "Gateway to Snowdonia," has been a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts since the Victorian era. As you follow the river and climb into the hills, you are literally running through the region's industrial heritage. The ruins of the lead mines you'll pass were once central to the local economy in the 19th century, now reclaimed by the dense conifers and ferns. Crossing the Pont-y-Pair bridge at the start/finish provides a stunning view of the Llugwy River’s rock formations, making it one of the most photographed—and scenic—spots to begin and end a Welsh trail adventure.
