Starting from the scenic Conwy Marina Village, this 7.8km loop offers a magnificent blend of coastal charm and rugged mountain ascent. The route begins with five kilometers of paved sections before transitioning into the wild terrain of Snowdonia, tackling a significant 311m of elevation gain. Runners will follow the legendary Cambrian Way up toward Penmaen Bach, navigating steep gradients that reward the effort with sweeping views of the Conwy estuary. The mid-section takes you around the atmospheric slopes of Alltwen before following the North Wales Trail back toward the marina, making it a perfect "Short-Long" (SL) categorized run for those looking to build hill strength and technical trail confidence.
Conwy Mountain, known locally as Mynydd y Dref, is steeped in ancient History. As you climb, you will pass through the remains of the Iron Age hillfort, Castell Caer Seion, where the stone ramparts still stand as a testament to the area's strategic importance centuries ago. The landscape is a vibrant tapestry of purple heather and yellow gorse, particularly stunning in late summer. This area is also famous for its wild Carneddau ponies; seeing these hardy creatures roaming the ridgeline against the backdrop of the Irish Sea is a quintessential North Wales experience that makes this route feel far more remote than its proximity to the Victorian town of Conwy suggests.
