Starting from the Tinkersdale car park, this 6.3km loop is an atmospheric mix of woodland trails and brief residential stretches that perfectly captures the undulating terrain of North Wales. With a modest 79m of ascent, the route offers enough of a challenge to get the heart rate up — particularly through the "Hilly" sections — without being overwhelming for intermediate runners. You'll spend roughly a quarter of your run on paved paths, while the majority takes you deep into the heart of Bilberry Wood. Be prepared for soft footing underfoot; these trails can become quite muddy and technical after a Welsh downpour, so we recommend grippy trail shoes to navigate the leaf litter and earthen climbs confidently.
Runners will find themselves immersed in the rich history of Hawarden, an ancient village famously home to the Victorian Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone. Bilberry Wood itself is a local gem, offering a serene escape that feels worlds away from the nearby bustling commerce of Deeside. As you navigate the loop, look out for glimpses of the Hawarden Estate and the diverse local birdlife that thrives in the dense canopy. This area was historically significant for the coal mining industry, but today it serves as a lush, green sanctuary where the only sound you're likely to hear is the rhythmic beat of your own footfalls against the forest floor.
