Starting from the Moel Arthur car park, this 7.1km loop offers a quintessential Welsh hill running experience through the Clwydian Range. The route begins on relatively flat gravel tracks, allowing your legs to find a rhythm before tackling the steady, gradual ascent up Moel Llys-y-coed. As you climb, the terrain shifts to grassy paths that can become technical depending on the season. Reaching the summit rewards you with panoramic views across the Vale of Clwyd, but be prepared for a sharp, steep descent that will test your quad strength and technical footing on the return leg. With its exposed ridges, this "SL" (Short Local) category fell route requires runners to be mindful of shifting weather patterns common to the Flintshire hills.
Cilcain and its surrounding peaks carry a deep historical resonance, sitting within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Moel Llys-y-coed is flanked by Iron Age hillforts, most notably Moel Arthur, which guards the pass you begin and end in. Locals know this area as a heartland for fell running culture; it is rugged, steeped in folklore, and serves as a natural playground for those who prefer mud and heather to tarmac. After completing your run, the nearby village of Cilcain provides a perfect spot to refuel, offering a glimpse into the quiet, traditional pace of life in North Wales.
