Push your limits on this formidable 28.8km loop through the heart of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley. Starting in the charming town of Llangollen, you’ll enjoy a brief, flat warm-up along the canal towpath before the real work begins. This is a Category SL (Long) fell run characterized by a grueling 904m of ascent, taking you over the iconic summits of Moel Morfydd, Moel y Gaer, and Moel y Gamelin. The terrain is a true runner’s mixed bag: about 15km of paved surfaces bridge the gaps between rugged ridgelines, demanding climbs, and technical descents. The highlight for many is the traverse past the limestone cliffs of Craig Arthur, where the trail tightly contours the hillside above dramatic scree slopes—a section that requires sharp focus and stable footing.
Llangollen is a town steeped in Welsh heritage and a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, famous for hosting the International Musical Eisteddfod. As you navigate the Llantysilio Mountain Range, you are running through a landscape shaped by both ancient geological forces and human history, notably the slate quarrying and lead mining that once dominated these hills. The climb up Cyrn y Brain takes you past the "Sir Watkin’s Tower," an old hunting lodge landmark, offering a sense of the Victorian-era exploration of these uplands. Running here provides an authentic North Wales experience, where the weather can shift as quickly as the terrain, and the reward is always a panoramic view reaching as far as the peaks of Snowdonia on a clear day.
