This 28.2km adventure out of Llangollen is a true test of mountain running mettle, blending 754m of vertical gain with a technical mixed terrain. After a steady warm-up around the base of Fron Fawr, you’ll tackle the legendary Offa's Dyke Path, navigating the scree slopes beneath Craig Arthur where nimble footwork is essential. The route demands deep reserves for the steep, wild ascent of Cyrn-y-Brain before transitioning into the highlight: a fast, flowing traverse along the iconic Eglwyseg Escarpment. With limestone cliffs towering above and expansive valley views below, the final push up to the ruins of Castell Dinas Brân provides a punishing but rewarding climax before a rapid descent back into town.
Llangollen is steeped in Welsh folklore and industrial history, serving as a gateway to the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley. As you run past World’s End, you are traversing a landscape shaped by ancient tectonic shifts and carboniferous limestone, once a hub for lead mining and quarrying. The majestic Castell Dinas Brân, which marks the end of your climbing, was a 13th-century stronghold built by Gruffudd ap Madog, likely atop an even older Iron Age hillfort. Running here isn't just a workout; it is a journey through a UNESCO World Heritage site corridor, where the dramatic "Panorama" has inspired poets and artists for centuries.
