Tackle the heart of the Clwydian Range with this invigorating 11.2km clockwise loop starting from Bwlch Pen Barras. This route is a true fell runner's delight, offering a challenging mix of bare earth, technical stony climbs, and fast gravel forest tracks. With 322m of vertical gain and reaching elevations above 500m, runners will experience the raw beauty of North Wales. The terrain demands focus and sturdy footwear, especially during the steeper ascents where the trail transitions from sheltered woodland to exposed moorland. Be prepared for a rewarding burn in the legs followed by a sweeping, rhythmic descent back through the lower forest sections.
Moel Famau, or "Mother Mountain," is the highest point in the Clwydian Range and is steeped in Welsh history. As you crest the summit, you'll reach the iconic remains of the Jubilee Tower, built in 1810 to commemorate the golden jubilee of George III. On a clear day, the panoramic views are unparalleled, stretching from the distant peaks of Snowdonia to the Irish Sea and even as far as the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. This area is a protected Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); the heather-clad hills you run across are vital habitats for rare birds like the black grouse, adding a touch of wild majesty to every mile of your trek.
