For runners seeking a formidable test of endurance in North Wales, this 31.5km loop through the Clwydian Range delivers a masterclass in trail running. Starting from Llanbedr-Dyffryn-Clwyd, you'll tackle a massive 1,205m of vertical gain over a series of iconic peaks including Moel Famau, Moel Arthur, and Penycloddiau. The terrain is wonderfully varied and entirely unpaved, shifting from soft peat and grassy ridges to technical, rocky descents that require sharp focus. This is a high-altitude "rollercoaster" where the steep climbs are punctuated by fast, sweeping sections of the Offa’s Dyke Path, making it an ideal training ground for ultra-marathoners and mountain goat specialists alike.
Beyond the physical challenge, this route journeys through a landscape steeped in ancient history. You'll pass the distinctive Jubilee Tower at the summit of Moel Famau and circumnavigate the massive embankments of Penycloddiau, one of the largest Iron Age hillforts in Wales. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) provides breathtaking panoramas that stretch from the mountains of Snowdonia to the Irish Sea. Running here feels like stepping back in time, as you traverse prehistoric boundaries and rugged heather moorland that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Post-run, the local grit of the Clwydian hills is best rewarded with a visit to a nearby pub in the Vale of Clwyd.
