This 14.5km circuit around Corwen is a quintessential Welsh fell running experience, classified as a Short-Long (SL) course with a demanding 434m of elevation gain. The journey begins with a sharp ascent past the Pen Y Pigyn viewpoint, leading you onto rugged, peat-heavy terrain and heather-lined paths that test your footing, especially after rain. After reaching the atmospheric ruins of Liberty Hall, runners face a technical ridge traverse to Pen Creigau'r Barcu at 553m. The route then plunges into a steep, adrenaline-inducing descent through dense forest before transitioning to a tarmac lane into Cynwyd. To finish, you can open up your stride on the refreshingly flat old railway path back to Corwen, providing much-needed relief for tired legs.
Steeped in local lore and industrial heritage, this route traverses the historic heart of the Dee Valley. Liberty Hall, once an elegant 18th-century hunting lodge built by the Bagot family, now stands as a lonely sentinel overlooking the rugged moorland. As you run through the forests and down into the village of Cynwyd, you are following in the footsteps of the Victorian travelers who once frequented the Ruabon to Barmouth railway line. This area is deeply connected to the legend of Owain Glyndŵr, the last native Prince of Wales, and the surrounding peaks offer panoramic views of the Berwyn Mountains, making it a favorite training ground for local hill runners looking for both heritage and high-intensity climbs.
