This 8.5km circuit offers an invigorating blend of coastal road running and rugged limestone headland exploration, starting from the iconic Lover's Walk. With an ascent of 234m, it’s a challenging "SL" category course that rewards your climbing with panoramic views of the Irish Sea and the distant peaks of Snowdonia. You'll spend about a quarter of the route on paved sections like the historic Marine Drive before transitioning to hills that test your vertical gain as you push toward the Great Orme summit. The mix of surfaces requires good traction, especially when navigating the grassy slopes back down toward Llandudno.
The Great Orme is a massive limestone headland that has served as a landmark for millennia, and running here feels like traversing living history. As you navigate the trails, keep an eye out for the famous wild Kashmiri goats that have roamed this area since the 19th century. The route passes near the site of one of the world's most significant Bronze Age copper mines, and the name "Orme" itself is derived from the Old Norse word for sea serpent—a nod to the Vikings who once sailed these Welsh waters. It’s an area rich in folklore and natural beauty, making every kilometer feel as much like an adventure as a workout.
