This 12.0km out-and-back loop from Pontllanfraith offers a wonderfully flat and accessible escape into the heart of the Sirhowy Valley. Primarily following the well-paved Sirhowy Valley Line, runners will enjoy a consistent surface that is 85% paved, making it an ideal choice for a steady tempo session or an easy-paced long run. With only 57m of total ascent, the course tracks the gentle meander of the river through lush woodland toward Sirhowy Country Park, crossing the water at Nine Mile Point and Pont Lawrence Rees Lane to provide a fresh perspective on the valley's natural beauty before looping back.
Steeped in industrial heritage, the route follows the path of the old tramways and railways that once powered the South Wales valleys. As you run through the Sirhowy Country Park, you are passing through land that was once dominated by ironworks and coal mines—a stark contrast to the tranquil, green landscape reclaimed by nature today. Keep an eye out for local landmarks like the Gelligroes Mill, famously associated with the Chartist movement and William Price. This area is a local favorite for its "green corridor" feel, providing a sheltered environment that stays relatively protected from the Welsh wind, perfect for year-round training.
