Prepare your quads for a vertical challenge on this 11.2km circuit that showcases the rugged beauty of the Brecon Beacons. Starting from the tranquil canal side in Llangynidr, you'll briefly warm up on the flat towpath before tackling a relentless, grassy ascent to the 551m summit of Tor y Foel. Rising 447m over just a few kilometers, this category-4 hilly route demands focus and fitness. Once you reach the trig point, you're rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the Usk Valley and Talybont Reservoir. The descent offers a technical change of pace through lush woodland, eventually rejoining the Usk Valley Walk for a welcome, flat sprint back to the finish along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.
Llangynidr is steeped in the industrial and natural history of South Wales, serving as a gateway to some of the most dramatic landscapes in the National Park. The "Mon and Brec" canal, which frames the start and end of your run, was once a vital artery for transporting coal and iron during the 19th century; today, it is a serene haven for local wildlife and runners alike. Tor y Foel itself stands as an iconic landmark, often described as the "Hill of the Mouth" in Welsh. Runners should keep in mind that at elevations above 500m, the Welsh weather can shift rapidly from sunshine to mist, making this a true mountain running experience that requires proper gear and preparation regardless of the season.
