This 10km loop from Llanfoist offers a quintessential Welsh fell running experience, balancing a steady climb with breathtaking technical sections. Starting on the Cambrian Way, you'll tackle a significant 505m ascent that takes you well above the 500m contour line. The terrain is an even split between paved lanes and rugged mountain trails, making it ideal for runners looking to transition from road to trail. As you summit The Blorenge, expect sweeping panoramic views of the Usk Valley, but be prepared for the exposed nature of the plateau—the weather here is notoriously unpredictable, so high-grip shoes and a windproof layer are essential for navigating the hilly descent back to the start.
Steeped in industrial heritage, the area around Llanfoist and The Blorenge was once the beating heart of the Welsh iron industry. As you run, you are traversing a landscape designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site; the paths were originally engineered for tramroads that transported coal and iron ore to the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal below. Today, the mountain is more famous for its diverse birdlife and red grouse than its industrial past. Local runners often favor this loop for its "punchy" profile and the way it captures the dramatic transition from the lush valley floor to the wild, heather-clad moorland of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
