Starting from the Weardale Railway car park, the route begins with a flat, mostly grassy section that runs alongside the river. This initial part offers a smooth and easy warm-up, with the natural surroundings providing a pleasant, scenic backdrop. The next section involves a climb through wooded areas. Here, the trail is well-maintained and consists of compacted gravel or dirt paths, making for a steady ascent. The climb is manageable but provides a good workout as you move through the trees. The final approach to Knitsley Fell summit changes to peaty paths through heather. After reaching the summit, descend back to the river. The descent involves returning to the grassy riverbank, which is flat and even, providing a smooth finish to the run. This final stretch along the river allows for a relaxing conclusion after the more challenging sections of the route.
